The acronym AIM stands for “Achieve, Inspire and Motivate.” The AIM program is only one of numerous programs supported by The Learning Choice Academy (TLC). It is a unique approach to education that caters to those parents who prefer to homeschool their children, yet want them to have at least partial experience in a classroom environment -and interaction with other children in their age group- as well as a credentialed teacher.
For many parents, this is the best of two worlds. They still have control over what and how their children learn, but they also have a partner who will assist with their children’s education by teaching them within a classroom environment. The AIM teacher gives intensive instruction twice a week, focused on math, language arts and science. In addition, she prepares work packets that align with what she is teaching that the children take home and work on until the next time they come to class. Parents teach and guide their children during the days they are home.
The kindergarten through second grade AIM teacher in the TLC Chula Vista site is Colleen Maldonado. Mrs. Maldonado is a tall, energetic and charming young teacher. She greets me cordially when I request an interview, and she shares with me her passion for teaching. Mrs. Maldonado taught in a traditional charter school for four years as a third grade teacher in a bilingual environment. Mrs. Maldonado is fluently bilingual in addition to being an excellent and nurturing teacher. “I truly believe that all students learn differently, and this is a great way to make sure all students have what they need to be successful,” she expresses.
Mrs. Maldonado is one of the teachers who are piloting this new program. Like all new endeavors, it is a program that is constantly being refined and redesigned. According to Mrs. Maldonado, so far TLC parents seem to really like and appreciate the support they get through this program. “Parents have been great, and I even have a parent who comes in to help me every time I teach!” says Mrs. Maldonado. It remains to be seen how this program continues developing in the future.
