My Soliloquy
The day is here at last. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. I let my eyes wander around the newly decorated room. Fresh bulletin boards, a colorful welcome sign at the door, brand new boxes of crayons, and plastic tubs at each table filled with materials ready to be used. The tables are low, the chairs are tiny. This is the first day of the school year, and the very first day I take over my own class as a teacher. This is it…this is the culmination of sleepless nights trying to finish all my work while my children were asleep. No more taking classes at night and completing innumerable tests for the privilege of teaching precious little children. I have earned the right to be here. I am excited and nervous at the same time. What will the parents think of me? How are they going to trust me enough to hand over their most prized possession? Calm down…take another deep breath. It will be fine. I glance one more time around the classroom and smile widely. It is time. My students will be crossing the threshold any minute now. I am ready.
