What is The Learning Choice Academy?
The building that houses TLC looks quite ordinary from the outside. When you walk in, however, you realize that this is indeed a school, although quite different from most of the ones you probably know. As I walk inside, I see a smiling receptionist, asking me what I need. Looking around, I see a series of offices that are not quite enclosed. As a result, noise flows from one office space to another. I hear murmurs in some offices, as teachers work with whole families. To the left, I can see an Algebra class taking place. The voice of the teacher filters out, as she explains why any number raised to the zero power is always one.
I hear laughter, chatting, and earnest talk coming from the different spaces. As I continue walking, I observe an English class in which students discuss amongst themselves the problems with a society devoid of choice and free will. I look around, and it seems that every wall surface is covered with student work, notices, or colorful posters. In fact, I see many beautiful, colorful and persuasive posters created by the yearbook class, promoting the sale of the yearbook, yearbook ads, and the upcoming talent show.
Yes, TLC is unique. Students comply with their academic requirements in a number of ways that include independent study, or a combination of on-site classes and independent work. The beauty is the choice the name of this institution mentions. As a teacher, I know how different and special every single student is, and I breathe deeply in satisfaction- knowing that in this school things can be approached differently- and everyone is valued.
